With African Trilogy you are spoiled for choice when it comes to top-notch luxurious safari accommodation and Big Five safari experiences. From Nyala Safari Lodge and its sister lodge, Nyala Sands in the Balule private nature reserve – part of the Greater Kruger National Park and home to the Big Five – to eKhaya Bush Villa on Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate, gateway to the Kruger National Park and various Big Five private reserves in the Greater Kruger region.
Hoedspruit itself is a vibrant little town, set in the lee of the majestic Northern Drakensberg Escarpment and the renowned Blyde River Canyon – the world’s third largest green canyon and a truly breathtaking sight to see. This is South Africa’s “safari capital” where Big Five safaris are top of the menu.Â
Just 40 minutes from the Kruger Park’s Orpen Gate and an hour from the Phalaborwa Gate, Hoedspruit is ideally positioned and a perfect hub from which to base your amazing African safari. There’s no better way to escape the concrete jungle and socially distance than out in the African wilderness on safari – it’s good for body, mind and soul and the perfect way to reboot after months and months of lockdown blues!
MAXIMUM CONVENIENCE
Nyala Safari Lodge and Nyala Sands are just a short half-hour drive out of Hoedspruit inside the Balule where the Big Five roam freely, with no fences between them and the neighbouring Kruger National Park. Small, intimate and with all the luxurious finishing touches you’d expect from a modern safari lodge, they are the perfect place for groups of friends and extended families travelling together to spend some quality time in the African bush.
An exclusive-use option allows you to take out each lodge in its entirety, making it your own “home from home” in the Big Five wilderness. This gives you the flexibility you need to cater for all your family’s needs, with game activities and meals taking place when it suits you. Likewise, the beautiful eKhaya Bush Villa offers the chance to gather together in a group of friends and family and make this luxurious private safari house your own for a few precious days.
Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate may be close to the centre of town, but it’s wild enough to be considered a wilderness area. While not Big Five, you still have a great selection of wildlife on the estate, from plains game like antelope, zebra and giraffe to predators like leopard and hyena, which occur naturally here. You can cycle, walk, horse-ride and drive around the estate’s greenbelt, with its network of game drive routes and mountain bike trails.Â
We can arrange a fully guided Big Five safari in the Kruger Park for you during your stay, as well as game drives on nearby Big Five private game reserves, so you’ll get your fix of the wildlife action as well as relaxing in absolute luxury.Â

GUIDED GAME DRIVES
Experiencing the Greater Kruger wilderness is top of the list on an African Trilogy safari. And the best way to do this is on guided game drives in open safari vehicles. At Nyala Safari Lodge and Nyala Sands game drives take place twice a day, early in the morning and in the late afternoon.
Morning game drives head out just as the sun is beginning to rise to take advantage of the cooler temperatures and to see what has happened during the night… Have the lions made a kill? Was there a leopard close to the lodge? Will the elephants be at the waterhole? All of these things will be revealed as dawn breaks over the African bush.
You’ll stop en-route for coffee so why not bring some muffins, rusks and cookies with you to nibble on? You’ll be back at the lodge in time for a late breakfast and some rest and relaxation, heading out again in the mid-afternoon to explore the wilderness once more. This time your game drive is special as it includes some exploration after the sun sets with the help of a spotlight to help find nocturnal species.
Our safari guides are passionate, knowledgeable and experienced, ensuring you have a wonderful time and learn as much as possible on your game drives.
At eKhaya Bush Villa we can arrange morning and afternoon guided game drives on a local private Big Five game reserve as well as full-day guided safaris in the Kruger National Park.
